New York: Phelps-Stokes Fund, 1946. Hardcover. Very Good. Second edition, revised and enlarged. Octavo. Blue cloth gilt. Ex-library copy with a bookplate and a withdrawn stamp, numbers on spine, very good. A single volume that was intended to generate interest in the proposed multiple-volume project which never came to fruition. Includes introduction by Anson Phelps Stokes, an essay on the "Need of An Encyclopedia of the Negro" by DuBois and Johnson, a bibliography by Rayford Logan, a long list of proposed topics for the encyclopedia and a group photograph of the participants including DuBois, Monroe Work, Charles Wesley, Alain Locke, James Weldon Johnson, A.A. Schomburg, Benjamin Brawley, and others. The first edition sold out quickly necessitating a second edition, but the enthusiasm didn't carry over into the eventual publication of the complete project.
