EXCERPT: PREFACE TO THE REVISED EDITION . . . This book is an attempt to suggest how we of the twentieth century can view Western man's enduring past. The core is political - though due weight is given to the economic, philosophical, and cultural aspects of man's life - and the treatment of any single person or event must be limited. Yet it is hoped that by concentrating on certain civilizations and their problems, students will derive at least two benefits. first, they may discover in the past the roots of some of the problems faced by their own modern civilization. Second, they may thereby receive some guidance in learning how to face up to these same persistent problems today. I have bent every effort to make this a thoroughgoing revision. Each page has been carefully scrutinized. Because the narrative now concludes about the year 1600, and because the graded questions and extensive reference bibliography of the first edition are to be published in a separate manual, I have been able to devote considerably more space to the entire ancient world. New sections have also been added on India and China, and the material on the medieval monarchies, the Italian and Northern Renaissance, and the Catholic or Counter-Reformation has been amplified. Students will derive particular pleasure from the additional biographical information now included. Other changes have been made throughout, either to bring the account up to date or to increase the clarity of presentation. All the maps have been redrawn and some new ones added; a number of carefully selected photographs and additional illustrations have been incorporated into the text as teaching aids; new time charts provide chronological reviews for all the civilizations studied; and the pronouncing guide to the index has been revamped and expanded. The popularity of the Source Readings in the first edition has justified the inclusion of more of them. And finally, the revised bibliographies should prove particularly useful in that they now indicate which titles are available in paperback editions as well as which are especially recommended for students . . .. Second Edition 13th Printing. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket (As Issued). Illus. by Vernon Mould. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
