Pages are lightly tanned and thumbed at the edges, with light foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed Spine ends are crushed, with noticeable splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Pages are lightly tanned and foxed throughout, heavier to endpapers and pastedowns. Cracking to hinges with exposed binding. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Leather peeling to spine and corners, with noticeable scuffing and scratches overall. Moderate tanning to spine and edges.

He was created Earl in 1876. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition. Decorative red cloth binding with heraldic decorations in black and gilt. Gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 477 pages, with two pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Very bright and unfoxed; easily read. Floral endpapers. There is a faint penciled signature, and the remains of what appears to have been a newspaper clipping regarding "Endymion"on the front paste-down. The previous-owner has made occasional. really unobtrusive, notes in the text.
