About This Item
London: Harper Press, 2013. First edition. Hardcover. Fine copy/fine. 8vo. Boards. Pp. xvi, 400. Illustrated: (16) pp. of plates. Notes. Index.
The first eight chapters of this book introduce us--if we have forgotten--to the brilliant cast for the great scandal of the 1960s: Prime Minister (Harold Macmillan), War Minister (John Profumo), Lord (Bill Astor), Doctor (Stephen Ward), Good-time Girls (Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies) and so on. What happened in 1963 marked the end of a deferential England where hypocrisy, snobbishness, bullying and class superiority began, finally, to come to an end. It was--and remains--a fascinating drama.
