Boston: Ballou's Pictorial , 1856. RARE. Original double-page wood engraving, black and white centerfold , from Ballou's Pictorial, Boston, Saturday, February 16, 1856, Vol. X, No.7- Whole No. 241. In an older frame under glass, frame size 23" w x 21" h, image size 20 1/2" w x 13 3/4"h. Engraving Near Fine, with a strong and clear image, signed in plate lower right John Andrew , in a Very Good frame, rubbed an a bit scratched. Clipping of banner of Ballou's Pictorial with smaller engraving of Boston Harbor attached verso (see pictures) missing about 1/3 of image. A great scene depicting a single ship action between the two ships that was an early victory in the War of 1812 for the U.S. Navy, and an important morale booster for America. USA: L. W. Walter, 1917. Hardcover with no dust jacket, 1917. Book has heavier corner wear to board corners and edges, and spinefoot, and aging and some soiling to cloth. This book has blue cloth with navy and red text and design. Tipped plate of American flag on center of front board. Interior tanning heavily from age and book has light warping from age and moisture. Has small bookworm hole affecting the upper right corner of pages 23- 83, completely out of the way of any text and only about 1/2 inch in depth. Missing page corner as depicted, affecting the first front illustration page, affects a small amount of caption text, and the edges of 2 photos. Book generally lays flat and is readable and is fairly supple, Binding is decent and will permit reading. Fair condition, but not terrible for its age. 100+ illustrations.
