Front board and front endpapers missing, rear board barely attached, spine half missing, contents are very clean except for margin-staining to rear endpapers and mild soil to half-title page, text block is tight and secure. Needs some restoration, but should restore to very nice condition.

London: Printed for A.Millar, 1751., 1751. 8vo. pp. xv, 127, [1]. A fine copy in modern half calf. First Edition. One of several works dealing with social vices and legal questions written by the novelist and magistrate. The work is dedicated to Lord Hardwicke, then lord chancellor, and includes discussion of robbery, drunkenness, gaming, poor laws, the punishment of receivers of stolen goods, vagabonds and vagrancy laws, apprehending felons, difficulties attending prosecutions, the trial and conviction of felons, &c. The great concern over excessive gin-drinking, mirrored in Hogarth's 'Gin Lane', led to the passage of the restrictive Gin Act later that year. Goldsmiths' 8657. Kress 5112. NCBEL II 930.
