Book is entirely in comic verse aimed at being pure escapism. It relates the adventures of three main characters in search of treasure; a sailor, his parrot and a monk. The parrot, who has a wooden leg, actually speaks and indeed was quite a personality, being able to do impressions and tell jokes. The story starts with the sailor being shipwrecked, then shanghied by a 'press-gang'.On route to China the ship is blown off course.Arriving in Carolina the sailor meets the monk who tells of a hidden treasure. In their search for the treasure they encounter Mexican bandits. Overcoming the situation they find the treasure and start their journey back.
Travelling by raft down a river they are captured by cannibals but escape, overcome rapids and waterfall and board a ship whose captain must first call at the Antarctic to rescue some explorers.
They encounter packed ice,are rescued by the explorers, face dangers in the form of a polar bear,Eskimos and wolves, meet a Mountie and help him catch his man,go through an episode with a bald eagle, the parrot is kidnapped and rescued with the help of a professor in a flying balloon; they are involved with Indians and gangsters, capture the elusive Loch Ness monster, rescue the monk from the clutches of a maniac and eventually all ends well back in England.
