"Convention Starts Today Episcopal," ran the headlines of the San Francisco Chronicle of September 26, 1949. And in the next issue it's readers learned that "San Francisco's Civic Auditorium became a cathedral yesterday for close to ten thousand Episcopalians from all parts of the world, gathered for the Fifty-Sixth General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States" For this triennial meeting there were met nearly 150 bishops and more than 600 clerical and lay deputies representing 74 dioceses and 28 missionary districts, domestic and foreign, with a baptized membership of two and a half million. It was not one of the largest Churches in Christendom, but it's influence in every State in the Union and in the lands of its overseas missions was out of all proportion to its numbers" - Prologue, The Episcopal Church In The United States: 1789-1931
