Rara prima edizione separata del 1780 della più importante opera del naturalista George Louis Le Clerc Conte di Buffon (1707-1788) che segnò l'inizio della geologia storica. Buffon fu un'esponente del movimento scientifico legato all'illuminismo e le sue teorie influenzarono le generazioni successive di naturalisti in particolare Jean Baptiste Lamarck e Charles Darwin. L'autore nell'opera avanza importanti teorie in seguito condannate dalla Sorbona. Propone una nuova cronologia della storia della terra divisa in sette epoche con un'età di 75.000 anni avanzando ipotesi sull'apparizione dei primi esseri viventi, la loro migrazione prima della separazione dei continenti e la loro differenziazione in funzione dell'ambiente. L'opera, apparsa per la prima volta nel 1778 come tomo V del supplemento alle "Histoire Naturellle", era composta da due volumi, siamo purtroppo in possesso solo del primo tomo. Buffon was an exponent of the scientific movement connected to illuminism and his theories inspired the next generations of naturalists in particular Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. In the work Buffon elaborates important theories, then condemned by Sorbonne University. He proposes a new chronology of the history of earth divided into seven epochs with an age of 75.000 years with hypothesis about appereance of first human beings, their migration before separation of continents and their differentiation in function of environment. The work, appeared for the first time in 1778 as tome V of supplement to "Histoire Naturellle", was made up oof two tomes, unfortunately we only have the first tome. Inside there are six planches.
