About This Item

63 pp. Lacks front wrap; title page and back wrap chipped; text block in good condition. Jean-Léon Chautard, Charles Bivors, and Louis Hippolyte Paon arrived in Boston in 1857 after escaping prisons in French Guiana. All three had fought at the Paris barricades in the 1848 Revolution and after arrest and imprisonment in France were transported to Algeria and thence to Guiana. Bivors and Paon ended up on Devils Island; Chautard was imprisoned on the mainland. Chautard engagingly tells the tales of all three, in part to promote his anti-Napoleonic agenda. Of the group, he had been the most politically active in France leading up to 1848. Subsequently, Chautard was a glove importer in Boston throughout the 1860s; Bivors is listed in the 1859 Salem directory as a cigar maker.

None for sale online, none on Rare Book Hub since one brought $70 at Swann in 1978.

About Archway Books

I have over thirty years experience as a full-time bookseller, ten years as owner of a brick and mortar shop and twenty-one on the internet and at book shows. My particular interest is in books and other printed objects as agents or artifacts of social upheaval and cultural clash.
