Includes an editors preface. a short biography of Locke, an epistolatory dedication to the Earl of Pembroke and an epistle to the reader as well as a fold out analysis of "Mr Locke's doctrine of ideas on a large sheet." Printed for Thomas Tegg, Cheapside, R Griffin, Glasgow and J Cumming, Dublin. Original boards but spine is a restoration on Vol 1 . Early pages are badly foxed in vol 1 diminishing throughout the 301pp. Vols 2 and 3 are slightly foxed throughout. This is the 26th edition of the work. . Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is one of John Locke's two most famous works, the other being his Second Treatise on Civil Government. First appearing in 1690, the essay concerns the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. He describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience.
