About This Item
Paris, 1748. From an Australian point of view, an important hand colored engraved French map of the world, with the hypothetical east coast of Australia. popularized by Bellin and showing Tasman's discoveries on the west coast of New Zealand. Mistakenly joining New Guinea with Terre du St. Esprit, a misunderstanding which was remedied with Cook's passage some twenty years later. North America shown with the Great Lakes connected by a large river to the west coast. Striking modern color with an elaborate cartouche with coat of arms flanked with eagles, beautifully colored; two compass rose, north and south. Printed in four sections and assembled into one with watermarks on at least two sheets. Image size: 25 5/8 x 19". Very good condition. References: Wagner, H. (NW) 560.
