About This Item

London: Printed for the Author and sold by John Nutt, 1702 A good copy of the first edition of this scarce work in newer full leather binding. John Dennis (1657-1734) is best known as a dramatist and poet, who was, until his later years, well-regarded as a leading wit and critic. This copy is in a newer binding, with gilt titles to spine, by A W Lumsden of Edinburgh. There is bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian, to the front pastedown. A loose bookseller's catalogue indicates that Robertson probably obtained the work in marbled paper wraps and commissioned the binding. The wraps have been retained. Contents: rubricated title page dated 1702; dedication 2pp; introduction and text 54pp with large folding table; finis. The top margin has been very closely cropped so some page numbers are missing, but all the text is present. There is some scholarly ink annotation at pp 11,28,31,32,38 - some of which involves crossings out. There is some expert paper repair - including to the table which has been laid on paper to preserve it.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
