NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (7.8 x 5.25 x 1.2 inches). xxi, 288 pages. Frontispiece Portrait of Bacon. Introduction by George E. Woodberry. Forest green cloth over boards with gilt bands and titles at the front panel and backstrip. Top Edge Gilt. Deckle Fore-Edge. Decorated Endpapers. Sewn in Green Ribbon Marker (detached). Hardback: No DJ 'as issued'. Francis Bacon (1561-1626), was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, essayist, and author. His essays, collected in this book, cover a wide and diverse range of topics, such as Death; Revenge; Love; Atheism; Superstition; Friendship; Riches; Usury; Beauty; Anger; the Vicissitude of Things, etc. His essays are also justly famed for their literary style (remember that Bacon has often been suggested as the "true" author of Shakespeare's plays). The essays are very brief---normally, just a page to two in length. Bacon's essays are deservedly among the "classics" of Western literature, and are well worth pondering over, and reading at leisure.
