ESSAYS OF GK CHESTERTON (2 books) by G.K. Chesterton - 1953: Plus Alpha of the Plough

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874 – 1936), perhaps best known now for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, was an English writer, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, lay theologian, biographer, and literary and art critic. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox"; George Bernard Shaw called him a "colossal genius". He wrote wrote 80 books, several hundred poems, 200 short stories, 4000 essays, and several plays; it has been said that an entire generation grew up under his influence so completely that no one realized that they were 'thinking Chesterton'.

This collection was first published in 1936; this copy was published by Collins in 1953. It is 284 pages of essays, plus an introduction and a biography.

It is pristine, save for a mark on the top of the pages. It's not on the pages, just on the top, when the book is closed—it looks like the ink ran over during printing. Otherwise, there are no marks in it or on it.

ALPHA of the PLOUGH, SELECTED ESSAYS 1931

ALPHA of the PLOUGH was Alfred George Gardiner (1965-1946), editor of the Daily News, the UK newspaper founded by Charles Dickens.

Gardiner's essays sought to teach the basic truths of life in an easy and amusing manner; Pillars of Society, Pebbles on the Shore, Many Furrows and Leaves in the Wind are some of his best-known writings. This copy contains 21 essays from Pebbles on the Shore and Leaves in the Wind.

It is part of the Kings Treasures of Literature, edited by Sir A.T. Quiller Couch and published by Dent in 1931. It appears to be from Scotland. It was a school book and the name of the student is in it.

It is red boards, 128 pages, 4 ½" x 6".

The covers are a little bruised and battered but it's perfectly readable.
