About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., 1906. Reprint, a volume in Macmillan's Golden Treasury Series. 16 cm x 11 cm, publisher's dark blue cloth, pp. xxiviii, (378), + (2) pp. catalogue for the Golden Treasury series; portrait of Addison in centre of title page. This volume bears the ownership signature of classical scholar Charles Norris Cochrane, (1889-1945), author of "Christianity and Classical Culture", 1940. George [Parkin] Grant considered "Christianity and Classical Culture" to be "the most important book ever written by a Canadian". Harold Innis referred to it as "the first major Canadian contribution to the intellectual history of the West". Here, Cochrane has made five brief references to the text in pencil on the rear pastedown endpaper, and an ink note to at least one page. Scratch to front cover (6 cm long), else a very good copy. .
