About This Item

1840 Japanese Pure Land Buddha Dante Hell Heaven Genshin Illustrated Woodblock

An interesting Edo woodblock-print of 'Ojoyoshu,' 'The Essentials of Rebirth in the Pure Land.' This edo era woodblock-print edition of 'Ojoyoshu' was written by the medieval Buddhist monk Genshin (942 - 1017). Horton points out,

"Scholars of Heian Buddhism frequently comment that because of the influence of Genshin's Ojdydshu, Pure Land thought and practice spread rapidly to all levels of society in the eleventh century."

Originally written in 985, this text is often considered the Buddhist version of Dante's The Divine Comedy. Its ruthless images of underworld realms showing the suffering and cruelty people might endure because of evil acts done while alive or from the judgement of the Ten Kings of Hell. These ideas of hell in 'Ojoyoshu' play a significant role in inspiring Japanese Buddhist paintings and other subsequent texts, particularly from the medieval period onward. This volume 3 of the 'Ojoyoshu' is the tale of the Pure Land with illustrations of the paradise with buddhas and other deities.

This rare undated 19th century edition is written in a column handwritten and type format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different blades and the blades engravings of dragons, tridents, flames and more!
