For more than 40 years, Sally Mann (b 1951) has made experimental, elegiac, and hauntingly beautiful photographs that explore the overarching themes of existence: memory, desire, death, the bonds of family, and nature's magisterial indifference to human endeavor What unites this broad body of work-portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and other studies-is that it is all "bred of a place," the American South Mann, who is a native of Lexington, Virginia, uses her deep love of her homeland and her knowledge of its historically fraught heritage to ask powerful, provocative questions-about history, identity, race, and religion-that reverberate across geographic and national boundaries Organized into five sections-Family, The Land, Last Measure, Abide with Me, and What Remains-and including many works not previously exhibited or published, Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings is a sweeping overview of Mann's artistic achievements.

Description:
Haarlem Netherlands: Tjeenk Willink, 1958. Paperback. Very Good. Very Good. This is the only multi-language example of a style of typography invented by this Dutch professor and amateur astronomer, that he called Hoodfdletters, Tweeling- en Meerlingdruk, in other words, "Capital, twin and multiprint". Printed in bold sans-serif typeface with minimal space between the lines, but there is plenty of space when the appropriate language screen is laid atop the text. The text is printed very tight in all caps in blocks with english, then french, spanish and german. Put on the language screen and you can read only the chosen langugage. Van den Bergh thought that books are too expensive for students and that with his system 60 -70 % less paper could be used for books. Softcover with four celluloid screens all laid into the publisher's original matching box. This is the only multi-language example of a style of typography invented by this Dutch professor and amateur astronomer, that he called Hoodfdletters,…

New York: Aperture, 2008. !st edition. Hardcover. New/no jacket as issued. NEW, in publisher's shrink-wrap. Ships from Hawaii with free Priority upgrade within the US. The year 2008 has witnessed a major shift in the way people across the world live: For the first time in human history more people live in cities than in rural areas. This triumph of the urban, however, does not entirely represent progress, as the number of people living in urban slums--often under abject conditions--will soon exceed one billion. From 2005 to 2007 Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen documented life in the slums of four different cities: Nairobi, Kenya; Mumbai, India; Caracas, Venezuela; and Jakarta, Indonesia. His lyrical images capture the diversity of personal histories and outlooks found in these dense neighborhoods that, despite commonly held assumptions, are not simply places of poverty and misery. Of course, slum residents continuously face enormous challenges, such as the lack of health care, sanitation and…

Pre-Echo Press, Nov 2021, 10.5 x 12.25 inches, portrait, Softcover, 176 pages Pre-Echo Press presents Eclipse Body & Soul Syntax, an artist book by New York City based, English artist, Nick Relph. "Nick Relph's new book, "Eclipse Body & Soul Syntax," collects years of digital street scans of New York City construction posters, an eerie portrait of a supersizing metropolis." New York Times. Amounting to a sort of unofficial and urgent index of a new city quickly replacing an old one, the book is a collection of scans made over the past decade, using a library wand scanner, clandestinely collected from building sites' public postings, all over New York City. Extreme high resolution butts up against the handheld nature of the scanning process, and the uncanny irreality of manufactured light and space of the construction renderings, to create an ominous dictionary of the dystopian present of urban cities around the world. A mysterious…

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
