Small nick and some fraying at the crown of the spine, faint old spot and tide mark at top edge near the gutter (faintly beginning at p. 207, then to end); still, a very good, bright, tight copy. First edition of Thoreau's third book, published posthumously and equipped with a preliminary 33 page biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson. BAL records the edition consisted of 1558 copies. Early manuscript index on front binder's blank in both volumes. Spines darkened and slightly crazed, joints a bit worn and slightly cracked in places (but sound), occasional spotting and foxing to Part I, brown spot in fore-edge of Part VII, clean 5 cm tear in top edge of leaf 63/4 of Part VII, with no loss, still a good set in contemporary dress. Old morocco faced slipcase. First editions, first printings, of each part of Irving's second major sequence publication, with BAL's state 'A' of the text on page 240. Otherwise, and in general effect, a very nice copy of a scarce Nineties title, with a bookplate (C.C. Signed "Bound by Riviere" in type on the verso of the front flyleaves. The cloth from the original bindings is pasted onto the rear flyleaves of each volume. Marbled endpapers. The bindings are rubbed, especially at the hinges, and the headcaps of the spines have some brief chipping. There is a larger chip at the headcap of the spine to Volume I. A sound set with some light foxing to the text. Frontis pieces by George Cruikshank. Rare.

NO publ. date- appears to be early or 1st Brentano's printing (there were supposedly three undated Brentano's editions, all of which were issued prior to 1901). Dark yellow cloth binding w/ extensive color floral motif on both covers, black lettering on front & spine; 39 pages + printer's statement- all printed on 1 side only; top edge of text block gilt (still bright), side edge rough-cut; 6.25 x 4""; red & black lettering on title page. Binding: tight, bright & clean covers w/ vibrant colors; very small corner bows, slight spine discolor (lettering totaly intact & readable).
