Venice: Cesarem Arriuabenum Venetum, 1518. Hardcover (Vellum). Very Good Condition. [16], 143, [1] ff. (8vo) 14.2x9.5 cm. Full early vellum with minor repairs and wear to the spine, a bit of worming to blanks. An attractive early copy of Bonaventure writing on salvation. Saint Bonaventure was canonized in 1482, but not made a Doctor of the Church until 1588. Notes to title, endpapers, and occasionally in the margins, all in an early hand. Attractively printed with historiated initials, a few small brown spots, but generally quite clean. Worldcat shows only 5 copies in institutional collections. Size: Octavo (8vo). Text is unmarked. 240 printed pages, brief Errata at end of text. This copy comes from the 2nd state of the complicated first publication, a run of 800 copies. This copy lacks the dedication and half title pages which were present in the first issue, as well as the adjusted dedication which was later reinsterted in modified form. Phillips, RA; Engraved title page (dated 1808) and 11 plates, all stating Ackermann as publisher, dated 1813 and engraved by Louis Schiavonetti, after Blake's designs. The pages have a little bumping to the edges but well away form the engraved area. Plates a little dusty and toned but the impressions are good. The original portfolio is brown Morocco grained cloth with elaborate blind tooled designs to both boards. Gilt lettering to the front board. Only one small piece of one silk tie remaining.
