About This Item
(Cape Town: J. C. Juta, [preface dated 1929]). 8vo; original dark green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; dustwrapper; pp. xii + 408, incl. index; folding map. Dustwrapper edgeworn and partially sunned (a remarkable survival nonetheless, considering the flimsy paper on which printed); backstrip partially sunned; trace of stippling to lower board; endpapers and edges a bit foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere; earlier owner's name signed verso of front free endpaper. Good condition. 'This work is a complementary volume to the Author's "Christian Missions in South Africa," and like the former endeavours to place the story of the missionary enterprise in its proper historical frame. Since the forces of Christianity and Civilisation move forward concurrently, the missionary undertaking stands in intimate relation to political and commercial movements, and can only be understood in its relation to them. The reader of this Book will obtain, together with full information on the progress of Christian Missions, a clear idea of the course of Central African exploration and colonisation during the past three or four centuries.' .
