Is now considered Scarce. 19th century family history of the Evelyn family, from their earliest migration to the American colonies, and including the history of Captain William Glanville Evelyn, who served in the British Army during the American Revolution. One of only 250 copies. From the Preface: "Since the private publication, in 1879, of the "Memoir and Letters of Captain William Glanville Evelyn," the Editor has obtained a copy of an historical pamphlet, written by the late Sebastian F. Streeter (recording Secretary of the Maryland Historical Society), and published by the Society in 1868. It relates to the proceedings of George Evelyn, who was the eldest son of the first of the name of Evelyn who emigrated to Virginia. This pamphlet, with some additional information found in the Public Record Office of London, concerning the Expedition of Thomas Yong and Robert Evelin (the younger brother of George) to Virginia, the letter of Lietutenant-Colonel Wm. Harcourt from America during the years 1776-7, various short journals of British Officers during the war of the Revolution, and some additional notes, &c., are all--with the above-mentioned "Memoir and Letters of Captain Evelyn,"--comprehend in the present volume, under the title of "The Evelyns in America." The family of Evelyn (or Evelin, as the name was anciently spelt), is supposed to have sprung from the Norman house of Ivelin or Evelin, which was connected with the Lusignans of Cyprus. Some remarks on the traditional history of the family amy be found in Aubrey's "History of Survey," published 1692, and in John Evelyn's Diary. George Evelyn, Esq., head of the English branch of the family, died at Wotton, Surrey, in 1603, leaving, with other issue, foru sons--Thomas, John, Robert, and Richard, between whom his estates were divided. The posterity of Thomas, the eldest son, are now extinct. Capt. Wm. Glanville Evelyn was descended from John, the third son, emigrated to Vriginia about the year 1610; and Richard, the fourth son, was the father of John Evelyn, the Diarist, and author of "Sylva." The old family - seat of Wotton House, once the residence of the author of "Sylva," is now int he possession of his collateral kinsman, William John Evelyn, Esq. Here are still preserved the MSS. of the well-known diary, several portraits of John Evelyn and his wife and their descendants, the Prayer-Book used by Charles I. on the scaffold, and many other most interesting relics of tha tperiod.
