Description:
Paris: Chez De Hansy le jeune, 1774 A very good copy in newer full morocco binding with fold out map by Robert de Vaugondy. M. de Freville was a teacher, who wrote a variety of works, including for children. This book is notable in that it gives one of the first accounts in French of Cook's 1st voyage in the Endeavour, 1768-71. The bindings have raised bands and gilt titles and dates to spines. They are in near fine condition. The endpapers are marbled in a near match for the original marbling on the page edges. New blanks have been inserted at front and rear. Vol I: half title (giving the alternative 'Hydrographie...as the title); title page with 2 ink signatures across the lower half (the ink is visible to verso); Preface v-xlviii; fold out map; text with decorative headpiece and tailpieces pp 1-518; Index 519-522; errata. Vol I is in very good clean condition with the occasional light mark. There is some worming to the top margin - mainly affecting pp 157-208; and less so pp 217-228. At…

8vo modern buckram, publisher’s brown wrappers bound in, illustrated with 8 hand finished tinted lithographed plates, a folding map and wood engravings, 539 [23] pp. Contents somewhat loose in binding, a couple of signatures sprung. Early newspaper clipping pinned in inside wrapper, some foxing at edges, and owner’s signature on title. Under the command of Captain Henry Kellett the ‘Resolute’ was one of a five ship expedition to continue the search for Sir John Franklin. McDougall who was the master on the ‘Resolute’, describes the voyage and the months they spent in the Artic, including commenting on ice conditions, wintering the ship and keeping the crew entertained. Unfortunately after reaching Melville Sound the ship became ice bound and had to be abandoned in May 1854. About a year and a half later the ship was found drifting in the Davis Strait by an American whaling vessel in September of 1855. The appendix of this work includes lots of useful information on temperature, equipment,…

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).

The text sets the scene as the Ship leaves New York harbor: "You are aboard the Ile de France--a completely rebuilt Ile de France." Described are: the Versailles Suite, the Chantilly Suite, the Cafe de Paris; First Class and Cabin Class dining and smoking rooms; theatre; reading room; gymnasium; tourist class salon, smoking room and bar. A 24-inch centerspread from a Lindner painting shows the Ile de France in full color. 12" x 8.25" Originally launched in 1927, the S.S. Ile de France was converted to a troopship in 1941. In 1947, the ship was returned to France, rebuilt, and launched on her second maiden voyage in 1949. This brochure celebrates the post-war, transatlantic Ile de France.
