Note: The decorative panel on the front cover "bears a representation of the arms of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pickering belonging to that royal property. The shield is in proper colours and on each side of the arms a halbert is represented. It is drawn from one of those formerly carried by two freeholders of Duchy land when the proclamation was read at the opening of markets." 293 pages, black and white illustrations, many full page: drawings, historic photographs - archaological finds; geological drawings; area maps including fold-out sketch map of Pickering District during Glacial Epoch; tissue guarded coloured frontispiece "Hall Garth, Pickering". Contents include: Index; List of Vicars of Pickering; Books of Reference. A detailed, carefully researched account from earliest times through the last millenium - local history written in a pleasant engaging style. (Pencilled note on front endpaper: "10/6 net May 26/05": the price in "old money" - half a guinea - when first published!) (Very uncommon). First Edition. Pictorial Hard Cover.
