London: Darton and Harvey, 1806. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. iv, [8], 420, [4] p. 18 cm. Fold-out frontispiece map. Half leather with marbled paper boards. Corners and edges worn, boards scuffed with large portion missing from rear board, chips to spine label. Former owner's label on front pastedown. Front free endpaper inscribed "Joseph Owen, a token of the great esteem of his affectionate Aunt Mary, April 6th, 1834." Front free endpaper nearly detached. Another ink signature on verso. Map has numerous tape repairs, including edges. Some stains to title and first pages but the rest is cleaner.

The letters of Arthur Middleton and others as they apparently travel through the eastern U. S. and into northern Canada, crossing the Rocky Mountains and reaching the Pacific. Fold-out Map is based on 1804 Arrowsmith map. Letters are on such topics as Philadelphia, the slave trade, white slave trade, Baltimore, Washington, Mount Vernon and General Washington, Mr. Jefferson and Monticello, Virginia, Carolina, slavery, Negro market, Yellow fever, classes of the inhabitants of America, Indians, New Orleans, Tennessee, Cherokees, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Lake Huron, Fort Chippewyan, Mackenzie's River, Dog-rib Indians, Esquimaux, etc. The author seems not to have actually visited our continent, her work based upon research from other texts. 4 p. itinerary at rear.
