Booker T. Washington was a famous 19th-century American civil rights activist known for his anti-slavery platform during the height of Negro lynchings in the American South. Born as a slave child during the American Civil War, Washington describes his difficulties and obstacles in his autobiography 'Up From Slavery'. This work follows more than forty years of his life, the state of race relations, and the rise and fall of the Negro social ladder.

While many authors and political leaders, such as WEB du Bois, were highly critical of Washington's work, he still emphasized the importance of education among the black population, especially in the South, which was a realistic tactic to easing racial tensions. This book was also gives the first mention of extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

Daniel Defoe was an English author who gained enduring fame for his novel, Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel and helped popularize the genre in Britain. While Robinson Crusoe is his best and most iconic work, he wrote numerous other works including another adventure voyage book called "A New Voyage Round the World". During the height of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress needed finding a way to pay the newly found American army. In 1775, the Continental Currency was first printed to supplement income. And while the value of these notes depreciated in value throughout the war, they hold significant historical and financial value today. These notes hold a reminder of the horrors of uncontrolled inflation and provide an important view into the history of American finance.
This two-dollar note was printed in Philadelphia by Hall and Sellers in 1775 – an incredible example of first edition American money!
