Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co., 1852. First Edition. Very good+ 3/4 leather and marbled paper covered boards with leather replacement of back strip which with a gilt. An octavo measuring 9" by 6" with three prior owner's book plates tipped-in on the front end sheets; and, with pencil notations on the title page. Scattered light foxing throughout. 487 pages including an index, text and tables. The primary text by Captain Stansbury is illustrated with a frontispiece, 34 tinted, lithographic plates (two of which fold-out) and the fold-out "Facsimile of a part of a map of North America" originally done in 1710. The appendices, written by others in Stansbury's party, are illustrated with 23 black and white plates of reptiles, insects, plants and paleontology. A portion or part of Plate IV listed in the contents under Paleontology illustrating Pleurotomaria coronula and Euomphalus subplanus is missing (and probably never bound-in). The two large, fold-out maps which are often found in a separate volume are, in this case, bound-in and are both in excellent condition the last of which has a small 1/2" closed tear at the margin. Considered quite scarce" by Howes (Howes, S-884; Graff, 3947; Sabin, 90372; Wagner-Camp, 219; Wheat, 764 & 765) An extremely attractive volume with restoration work to the binding saving the original marbled paper covers and leather corners.
