London: John Murray, 1861. First edition. Bound in full pebbled leather with raised bands, gilt titles and designs, marbled endpapers, speckled edges. Published London: John Murray, 1861. 8vo., xviii+479pp., plus28pp. publisher's catalog , dated May, 1861. Illustrated with 27 full-page engravings, including a folding frontispiece of a gorilla (the first ever of the animal), and 46 reproductions within the text. Folding map bound at the rear missing, front edge of first two sheets of catalog have old archival repair. Minor wear at the crown, hinges and tips else near fine. Internally fine, pages and plates bright white with no foxing - rare to find as such. French-American anthropologist Paul Du Chaillu spent nearly four years on his first expedition to Central Africa covering 8,000 miles. He brought back numerous specimens of exotic birds and confirmed the existence of the gorilla. His account is a seminal work on Equatorial Africa. . 1st. Hard. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo.
