About This Item

[New York]: Quip Publishing, 1924. First Edition. Octavo. Publisher's blue cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 229pp; illus. Tight, Near Fine copy in the very scarce original dustwrapper, toned and slightly ragged along edges, with small losses as head and heel of spine panel; just about VG. Bleiler-listed pastiche of humorous fantasy vignettes featuring the title character, clearly modeled on the eponymous fictional character invented by Rudolf Erich Raspe in his 18th-century fantasy Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. Brandeis was a long-time attending physician at Lebanon Hospital in the Bronx, and briefly edited the medical humor periodical Medical Pickwick, in which most of these stories originally appeared. Notable mostly for the illustrations by left-wing cartoonist William Gropper; this copy retaining the extremely uncommon Gropper-illustrated dustwrapper. BLEILER (1978) p.30.
