Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is a character - (and) he is subtly and devastatingly and unexpectedly funny. The solemn and ceremonious business of standing in a line being counted is funny; so is the dubious pleasure of living on a Flemish farm with a 'very premeating little pig' as a co-billettee. Routine, discomfort, uncertainty, danger - they are all funny as Sergeant Gwynn-Browne sees them. But there is another side to the picture.
