The Fables of Aesop, And Others, with designs on wood, by Thomas Bewick

by Aesop

Condition: Very Good/N

Newcastle: Printed by E Walker for T Bewick and Son, 1823 A very good copy of Bewick's 1823 Limited Edition Aesop's Fables, in contemporary half leather binding. With receipt page before the title page, including the signature of Thomas Bewick, a thumb print, a painted leaf and seaweed over a landscape, and the number 68 in pale brown ink, indicating that this was No 68 of the limited print run. The binding is in very good condition. It has been expertly rebacked to preserve the original spine which has gilt-lined raised bands and a leather title label. Boards marbled. There is a little wear to corners and edges. New endpapers. Contents in very good condition. Title page dated 1823 with signature to the top dated 1824. Generally very clean with just the odd spot or mark. There is some browning to the gutter of pp 288-89 where a leather title label (of the Life of Johnson) has been used as a bookmark. Some page corners have been turned over at some point. A nice copy.
