The Fables Of Aesop Selected, Told Anew And Their History Traced

by Joseph Jacobs

London - Macmillan, 1894 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. First edition.. The illustrated first edition of this work on Aesop's fables by the notable Australianfolklorist Joseph Jacobs. Jacobs was both a collector and publisher of English folklore. He is responsible for some of the world's best known versions of English fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs, Jack the Giant Killer, The History of Tom Thumb, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Aesop's Fables are believed to have originated with a storyteller of that namefrom Ancient Greece. Most likely they represent a storytelling tradition from that time. They have been transmitted to us through a number of different sources, and Jacobs presents their pedigree in a table before his notes. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally smart with some marking to the boards and some fading to the spine and to the rear board. The pages are untrimmed and the foredge is a little dusty as a result. The free end paper are a little age toned. Otherwise clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.
