FRENCH LANGUAGE The Fables of Jean de La Fontaine are French masterpieces: 239 fables. Jean de La Fontaine was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century.
According to Flaubert, he was the only French poet to understand and master the texture of the French language before Hugo. A set of postage stamps celebrating La Fontaine and the Fables was issued by France in 1995. A film of his life was released in France in April 2007 (Jean de La Fontaine - le défi starring Laurent Deutsch).

NEAR MINT, Book is solid,no pulling of the spine, very slight shelfwear at top and bottom of spine and , corners ever so slightlly bumped. Some yellowing, two spot of browning at top of frontispice and title page. Moire end papers, text and illustrations are exceptionally clean and vibrant. Pages 501-504 corner improperly cut, no damage, can be easily fixed. (did not want to attempt it, not enough experience yet. See photos). Smalll label on top offront end paper and inscription WoodwardHudson april 4, 1872. An outstanding copy for being 147 years old. Very unique gift.
