With book plate of "William Short, William & Mary College," later Thomas Jefferson's private secretary and "adopted son." Full calf, 293 pp., ornamental head- and tailpieces. French verses with facing-page prose translation. Professionally and discreetly repaired retaining original boards and backstrip. Ex-library with library marks limited to neat "Transylvania Library" stamp on front pastedown, ink stamp and number on title page. Spine cocked; spine and covers heavily rubbed particulalry at edges and corners, with some loss; page edges tanned, soiled, foxed; insect damage, stains, and previous owner's notes on front endpapers with small (1x3") clipping pasted to free endpaper, which is heavily worn and chipped; stains, marks, effaced name to front blank pages and title page; small area of insect damage to rear pastedown; foxing throughout.
