Harris and Son. London. 1820. FIRST EDITION. 12mo. (7 x 4.3 inches). 36pp. Illustrated with hand coloured vignette to the title page and 12 hand coloured woodcuts among the text. Some general thumbing and spotting to most pages. The hand colouring is still bright and vivid throughout. Dis-bound, but complete, in original fawn card boards, printed in black. The boards are rubbed and worn, making some the the printed area quite faint, and there are a few stains. Previous owner names and gift inscriptions, one dated 1820, on the inner front board. ---- Rare in first edition. Worldcat lists just 3 copies of this 1820 first edition, one in the UK, that in the Renier collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and 2 in the USA; The Eloise Ramsey collection at Wayne University in Detroit, and a rebound copy in the Bloomington Lilly Library at Indiana University. --- The author name, Mrs Poole (active between 1808 and 1823) is supplied by Marjorie Moon in her checklist of Harris publications. Macmillan and Co. Limited. London. 1898. FIRST SIXPENNY EDITIONS. 8vo. (8.4 x 6 inches). Both volumes are the first printings of the Macmillan sixpenny series. Illustrated with forty two and fifty line illustrations, respectively, by John Tenniel. Publishers original red printed paper wraps. Page edges a bit chipped, as to be expected with the cheap paper used in production, and a little toned but overall these are very good internally. The front paper wraps for both volumes and only the rear for Alice are present. Both paper spines have perished. Ink stamp of previous owner to the front wrapper of each volume. While not the most attractive example, these two First printings of the sixpenny series are a rare survivor with their original fragile wraps and not in too bad condition for 1898 paperback Children's books.

A few small marks to the blank endpapers of Officers and Gentlemen and some offsetting to Men at arms endpapers otherwise bright and clean copies of the books in the publishers dark blue cloth bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. All three in very good original dustwrappers, designed by Val Biro. Some minor chipping to the edges of Officers and gentlemen, while the other two volumes are very bright, fresh and near fine examples without any of the usual fading. The inner flap of the first and last volumes are price-clipped. Overall a very good, attractive set of Waugh's classic trilogy.
