About This Item

GIRDLESTONE, Thomas. Facts Tending to Prove that General Lee, was Never Absent from this Country, for any Length of Time, During the Years 1767, 1768, 1770, 1771, 1772, and that he was the author of Junius. London: P. Martin, 1813. 2 facs. viii, 138pp. Wanting portrait called for by Howes and Sabin. Tear to lower corner of pp. 17-18, not affecting text. Else a fine, clean copy in new leather-backed cloth boards. Howes G-197. Sabin 27506. Girdlestone argues that General Charles Lee (1731-1782) was the author of the LETTERS OF JUNIUS. Lee was a lieutenant with British forces in Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War and returned to Virginia to farm in the 1770s. In 1767 and 1768 he was in England and active as a critic of the government. Girdlestone's theory that Lee wrote the Junius letters is considered untenable, but his work reflects the fascination which these letters exercised long after their publication.
