London: Printed for F L for William Iles at the Flower-de-Luce in Little-Britain, over against St Bartholomews Gate, 1676 A scarce 1st edition copy of the english translation of Lucas Jacobson Debes account of the Faroe Islands. Debes (1623-1675) was a Danish priest and talented topographer. He arrived in the Faroes in 1652 and later became the Head of the Grammar School there. His account was first published in Danish in 1673 and contains the first detailed map of the islands. It is one of the earliest works on the Faroes. This copy is in a later full leather binding by Grieve of Edinburgh, with raised bands and gilt titles to spine. The binding has wear to edges, joints and corners but is clean and sound. Contents: initial blank; fold map (with small repaired fold tear); title; dedication 5pp; to the Reader 6pp; Author's Preface 9pp; contents 2pp; text with folding plate of whirlpool and diagram in the text pp 1-408; finis. The contents are generally clean and in very good condition. There are a couple of paler areas of text eg at p213; some pencil lining and scholarly notes; a couple of badly trimmed corners and turned corners; and the occasional small mark.
