About This Item

POTTER, Beatrix (1866-1943).
The Fairy Caravan.
Philadelphia: David McKay, 1929.
With illustrations by the author, including 6 full-page colored plates and many text vignettes. Quarto, 225 pp.; original green cloth, gilt-titled spine and colored pictorial cover design on upper cover.

Fine Limited First edition, one of 100 copies signed by Beatrix Potter.
This is copy no. 14, signed by the author on a tipped-in leaf bearing the statement: "The autographed edition of this book is limited to one hundred copies, none of which will be offered for sale."
VERY RARE AND OBSCURE version of this title, not detailed in Linder, Quinby or the V&A catalogue; apparently published to reserve USA copyright, issued simultaneously with the first trade edition also produced by McKay.
Provenance: Veronica Thorn (bookplate); afterwards in the personal collection of MAURICE SENDAK (but without any internal markings). The limited edition also came in a presentation box with printed pictorial cover label, while the Trade edition was issued with a pictorial paper dust-jacket; in some cases previous owners have added the jacket from McKay's regular version.

Beatrix Potter considered this story of a miniature animal-run traveling circus as "too personal [and] autobiographical" for her to feel comfortable allowing its publication in England. Manuscript versions of these stories date back as early as 1909. David McKay created a handsomely designed version of this title. Due to reciprocal arrangements between the US and Great Britain, publication in one nation implied a consequent relinquishment of rights in the other so Potter took 100 sets of sheets from the US edition and had a local printer run off 100 copies of an altered first gathering (8 pages), substituting new preliminaries, and had this British version bound in simple boards. The first UK trade edition did not appear until 1952, nine years after her death. see Linder p. 431; Quinby 29.
