It is doubtful whether any campaign of such brief duration spawned so many books in so short a time as the reconquest of the Falkland Islands,so it is important to stress that this is not merely another book about 'yomping'.General Fursdon did not set foot on the Islands until after the war was over and his book does not re-fight the battles. At the time he was Defence Correspondent for 'The Daily Telegraph',but most of his professional life had been spent as an Army officer. He took full opportunity to apply this unusual combination of experience to
understanding and portraying the many problems the British Forces had to solve in the early aftermath and to describing the effect the war had on the Island's inhabitants, livestock and wild life. With a joint-Service background and as a knowledgeable correspondent he was able to talk freely to all ranks of the different Services and, unusually,to experience life in the South Atlantic aboard a Royal Navy frigate. As an ex-Sapper he particularly appreciated what was involved in the lethal and technically demanding task of clearing up the enormous quantity of all types of mine and other unexploded items left scattered on the Islands. He also examines with a professional eye the difficulties which had to be overcome in repairing, extending and resurfacing the existing airfield to cope with the vastly increased requirements of the aftermath.
His description of South Georgia brilliantly evokes the beauty and the hostility of this remote island where all the trouble began.
Essentially a personal story,General Fursdon has nevertheless produced a timely and valuable study of the effect of modern warfare upon man and his environment.
