London: R and R Crosby and Co., 1814 A good copy of the extremely scarce hand-coloured variant of Thornton's Herbal. 2nd, 'enlarged' edition. Classed as 'good' because 2 pages are present in facsimile. In newer half leather binding with title label and gilt date to spine and marbled boards. The binding is in near fine condition. New endpapers. Contents with frontispiece portrait of Thornton, title, dedication, contents list, and text including appendix, table and general index. Paginated to p902. Each plant has its accompanying illustration engraved by Bewick. All the plants are hand-coloured - the colouring is consistent throughout and clearly done at publication. The frontispiece has some water-staining at the bottom and in the gutter and there is light staining to the title page. Contents are generally clean - some pages have browning or spotting. Page 633 is replaced by facsimile and there are some old tape marks on p632 probably where the missing page was. The index pages have frayed edges towards the end, and the final page is present in facsimile. There is a small repaired edge tear to p22 and to the last original index page.
