Boston: Tappan & Dennet. Fair. 1842. Second Edition. Hardcover. Two consecutive leaves have an area of heavy staining to the spine margins, approximate maximum width of stain 2" on each page. Diminishes on adjacent leaves. Small stain to the upper spine corners in front. Covers have a very small and a tiny ink stain to the front, slight wear to the outer corners, and very slight rubbing. Spine has light wear to the ends and a tiny nick to the center. Very small split to the front inner hinge. Name label and written name on front endpapers. ; Second edition. BAL 7591. .

In unrestored, original condition. First edition. 158pp. 1 vols. 16mo (12 x 8 cm). First edition. The second title in Hawthorne's Grandfather's Chair series for children: stories on American history from the Puritans to the American Revolution. Apparently a variant binding, as BAL and Clark both describe the basket weave embossing on slate cloth, and all copies as having a black paper label on the front cover. There is no evidence that a label was ever present on this copy. Very scarce. BAL 7591; Clark A7.1. Provenance: Herschel V. Jones (bookplate; his sale Anderson Galleries, 20 November 1916, lot 278)
