Octavo, 9 1/2" tall, frontispiece + xx + 512 pages + 18 black and white plates, black cloth with paper label on spine. A good, clean hardcover edition with minor shelf wear and rubbing to edges BUT several small frays to the cloth at the bottom edge; binding solid, paper clean and lightly yellowed with light foxing to the endpapers.

The first edition of this work, the complete eight volume set, volume one the undated 1922 copy. Diary of Joseph Farington, landscape painted and diarist in eighteenth century England, from 1793 to 1821, covering his life up until only a few days before his death. An invaluable historical source, particularly when concerning the London art scene of the time and the internal workings of the Royal Academy. He also had access through his wife's family (the Walpole) to information on government policy, and attended major political trials of the day including Warren Hasting's failed impeachment. Originally constituted of sixteen volumes, these weren't published until 1922 after being sold at auction in eight volumes, edited by James Greig.
