About This Item

Publisher: Harper Collins UK. Utg. 2014. Original Hardcover. 255 p. This book is brand new. Language: Engelska --- Information regarding the book: A commemorative golden anniversary edition of Tolkien's classic book, including a new introduction, a map, a copy of Tolkien's unpublished short story which he expanded for publication, his notes for an aborted sequel, and the original first edition illustrations by Pauline Baynes. Farmer Giles of Ham did not look like a hero. He was fat and red-bearded and enjoyed a slow, comfortable life. Then one day a rather deaf and short-sighted giant blundered on to his land. More by luck than skill, Farmer Giles managed to scare him away. The people of the village cheered: Farmer Giles was a hero. His reputation spread far and wide across the kingdom. So it was natural that when the dragon Chrysophylax visited the area it was Farmer Giles who was expected to do battle with it!. We have this book in our store house - please allow for a couple of extra days for delivery.

Synopsis

The editors of the best-selling rediscovered Tolkien novel Roverandom present an expanded fiftieth anniversary edition of Tolkien's beloved classic Farmer Giles of Ham, complete with a map, the original story outline, the original first-edition illustrations by Pauline Baynes, and the author's notes for an unpublished sequel. Farmer Giles of Ham is a light-hearted satire for readers of all ages that tells the tale of a reluctant hero who must save his village from a dragon. It is a small gem of a tale that grows more delightful with each rereading.

On Jul 30 2007, KnC Books said:
Whether you love the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, or just can't figure out what the fuss is all about, you owe it to yourself to read Tolkien's short story "Farmer Giles of Ham".

The story allows you to experience J.R.R. Tolkien at a slightly slower, less grandiose scale than the sweeping panorama of "The Rings". Somewhere between a fairy tale and a fable, the story revolves around Farmer Giles, his village, and a dragon. Along with the expected mythical creatures and heroic adventures are bits of humor and everyday life, making Giles just another person who has heroism thrust upon them in a stressful situation.

The story reminds me of James Thurber's "The Great Quillow", another story appropriate for adults, taht you can also read to your children.
