Heinlein (1907 - 1988) was an American science-fiction writer. Often called the "dean of science fiction writers", he wrote sometimes-controversial works that continue to have an influence on the science-fiction genre, and on modern culture more generally. He, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke are often considered the "Big Three" of English-language science fiction authors. He became the first Science Fiction Writers Grand Master in 1974. A serialised version of FARNHAM'S FREEHOLD, edited by Frederik Pohl, appeared in Worlds of If magazine (July, August, October 1964). The first edition was published by Putnam's in 1964. The novel deals with the author's concerns about individualism in the context of displacement into a future society.
