First and only edition. Printed by Poeschel & Trepte. Leipzig. Published by Wiking Verlang. Berlin. 1940. [Einband und titelblatt schnitt Alfred Zacharias die lagekarten zeichnete Tobias M Barthel die drucklegung erfolgte in der offizin von Poeschel & Trepte]. Small folio. 95pp, (1)p.. 8 maps. Original cream decorated boards, with original protected d/w, with a couple of minor marks and chipped/short tears to edges. Untrimmed hand-made paper. A nice crisp bright copy of a very scarce item.
A day to day military account of the Campaign in the West, The Battle of France, from the Wehrmacht perspective. From the invasion of Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands on the 10th May, to the Second Armistice at Compiègne signed on the 22nd June which came into effect at midnight on the 25th June 1940. Preface by Adolph Hitler dated May 10th 1940.
Alfred Zacharias (1901-1998) German Expressionism graphic artist and writer.
Carl Ernst Poeschel (1874-1944) German printer, typographer and publisher, who spent some time in the UK with Edward Johnston, Douglas Cockerell, Eric Gill and Emery Walker. He founded the first German Private Press. Poeschel was awarded the Gutenberg Ring in 1940. In December 1943, the booksellers' quarter of Leipzig and Poeschel's factory were almost completely destroyed. A further bombing raid in 1944 completely destroyed the business.
Tobias M. Barthel German graphic illustrator of several contemporary books published by Wiking Verlag.
Both the artist Alfred Zacharias and the printer Carl Ernst Poeschel feature in the MOMA German Expressionism Collection.
Not held by the Deutsche National Bibliothek. One copy only held worldwide: in the British Library. Rare.
