About This Item

New York, NY: Penguin Books, 1998. First Edition, First Printing . Soft cover. Very Good/None as Issued. Text/Bright, Clean & Near New w/2 folded corners. Softcover/VG w/light edge & surface wear, and faint creasing to first 6 pgs from poor handling. A diverting murder mystery & character study from Sir John Clifford Mortimer (1923 - 2009)[1], English barrister, dramatist, screenwriter, and author best remembered for the popular television series and books, Rumpole of the Bailey (inspired by his own father, Clifford). This the story of Felix Morsom, a genteel novelist, whose life is transformed when during a book signing session he's confronted by a woman who declares him the father of her 11-year- old son. Felix and a friend of the accuser are overheard exchanging threats; the latter is found bludgeoned to death and Felix goes into hiding among homeless vagrants, is captured and brought to trial. The plot is simple but allows vivid portraits of supporting characters and scenes of London's ``underworld'' of crime and poverty. Strong copy despite flaws.
