About This Item

Bremen, Germany: Bremische Zentralstelle fur die Verwirklichung der Gleichberechtigung der Frau, 1996. First printing. 56 pp., 7.75 x 11 inches. Perfect-bound in printed card covers. Bilingual German and English text, illustrated in color throughout. Introduction by the curator, followed by essays by Detlef Stein (on Marikke Heinz-Loek and Kirsten Johannsen), Ruth Wöbkemeyer (on Irmgard Dahms, Isolde Loock, and Anne Schloepke), and Hannah Higgins (on Alison Knowles). With biographies, and a list of lectures and performances. Light edge-wear and handling to wrappers, otherwise fine. Scarce; WorldCat cites just one institutional holding, in Germany.

An exhibition and series of events at the Bremen Central Office for the Realization of Equal Rights for Women, featuring artworks, installations, performances, and lectures by twenty-one artists, among them Barbara Bloom, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Alison Knowles, and Valie Export. From Richter-Glück’s introduction: “The curatorial concept of the ‘female coalities’ series is based in part on the ideas of the Italian philosophers of the Luica Muraro school in Verona and the Libereria delle donne in Milan who have established a symbolic matriarchal system above and beyond the partriarchal system in which we all undoubtedly live. Stimulated by discussions about this approach I have interpreted their proposed forms of symbolic communication and implemented them as a guide for direct action.”

About Passages Bookshop

Passages Bookshop stocks fine, rare, and unusual books and graphic art, with a concentration on modern and contemporary literature and art (particularly poetry and the avant-garde), artist's books, fine printing, and the book arts. The successor to New York City's Bridge Bookshop (late 1980s), Passages opened in Albuquerque in 1994 and relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1997. In November of 2015 we moved to a new retail shop and gallery centrally located in Portland's east side, two blocks north of the convention center, where we are typically open Thursday through Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 pm, as well as by appointment or chance. Proprietor: David Abel,
