Dans cet essai écrit en 1973, Dolores Klaich attaque tout d'abord le discours dominant et les théories scientifiques qui réduisent l'homosexualité féminine à une maladie ou à être identique à l'homosexualité masculine. Elle montre en quoi ce discours est lié aux fantasmes masculins de pouvoir, qui censurent la sexualité des femmes.
L'auteure dit ensuite comment les textes de Sapho ont été peu à peu déformés, censurés et comment Colette, Renée Vivien, Nathalie Barney, Radclyffe Hall, Gertrude Stein et Virginia Woolf lèvent cette censure et témoignent, dans leurs textes et dans leur vie, de leur homosexualité. Des interviews de femmes ajoutent une dimension documentaire. Elles y parlent de leur amour pour d'autres femmes. Femme et Femme fait état de la réalité de ces désirs différents, de cette " autre sexualité " jusque-là niée, tue, que toutes les femmes connaissent et que celles qui luttent dans les mouvements de libération des femmes commencent à faire exister ensemble.
