First edition. Limited to 500 copies, of which this is number 52. Quarto. (Measures 9 x 7 1/4 inches). Half maroon morocco over marbled boards, gilt-stamped spine with five raised bands, rebacked preserving the original spine. Illustrated with portraits each with it's own protective tissue guard. Corners bumped and spine rubbed. Very good.

From the library of U.S. Grant, "General U.S. Grant/ With the sincere regards/ of his friend/ Geo. W. Childs/ Philadelphia/ Christmas/ 1884."

Childs was a prominent newspaper publisher of the time and there is an entire chapter devoted to him in this book. Grant is also mentioned a couple of times as well.
