Description:
West Yarmouth, Mass: The Stonecroft Press, 1926. [Walt Whitman] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 15cm), pp.xvi; 304. Publisher's red cloth, gilt titles to upper and spine. Interior clean with moderate toning throughout. Ownership inscription in black ink to flyleaf. Edges toned, some dust damage to top. Spine a tad sunned. Slight wear to binding extremities, lower board gently bumped. Very good. As Walt Whitman's close friend and perhaps his greatest fan, William Sloane Kennedy wrote many studies on the poet, including 'Reminiscences of Walt Whitman with Extracts from His Letters and Remarks on His Writings.' This book however, which Sloane considered his most important work, is an in-depth analysis on 'Leaves of Grass,' covering its public reception, the many edits it went through, and some clarifying interpretations of the poem's more difficult sections.
